Josefina Diaper Bags – Très Chic

I bought our first diaper bag, a beautiful, vintage, understated Vera Bradley off of Poshmark for $15. Unsurprisingly, a year later, it ripped. I started to look for a replacement, and as a self-proclaimed Francophile, I was dying to be just a little more chic in my day-to-day life.

Of course since Instagram can read our minds, I was shortly served ads for what looked like a French company making impeccably chic diaper bags. Gone were the nylon exteriors, faux-leather backpacks and skiphop merchandise that graced most registry pages. This bag was genuine leather, and looked very adult – something that even I could carry with me going out and about and had pockets inside specifically to hold all the little merchandise our kids need. The information (in English) on this bag was scant, but I was interested and took the plunge and ordered. For anyone else who is considering this brand and switching to a more European style diaper bag, I hope you find the below useful.

Size

There are two sizes to choose from, a large and a medium. I got the large, and it’s closest to what you would think of as a standard diaper bag. The medium is a bit smaller, and as you can see by the video demo, you can pack less inside. For context, after packing in diapers, wipes, a lay-down blanket, swaddle, change of clothes, two bottles and various toiletries (sunscreen, diaper creams, hand sanitizer, etc.), the Large version was filled pretty much to the brim.

Interior Organization

The interior is fabulous. It has 9 pockets and a middle compartment inside, each made to hold something different. You can find a video showing different ways to pack the bag here. Inside you will find two bottle holder pockets, three small pockets to hold diapering equipment, and a spacious middle for change of clothes, swaddles, etc. I found it was spacious enough to hold everything I needed, and the number of pockets inside helped tremendously with staying organized (our last bag had just one big void and so the items were always one jumbled mess).

Exterior

Ok, so, it’s beautiful. It comes in a variety of colors, and the exterior is of soft, brushed leather. It’s smooth to the touch, not pebbly, not shiny. It’s fabulous. The site also offered free monogramming when I purchased, so I was able to monogram it in discreet gold lettering towards the top. The bag has two purse-length handles if you want to hold it by the hand, and a larger strap with buttons on the side so that you can secure the bag to the stroller. The craftsmanship is evident (each bag is handmade in Spain) and I didn’t see any seams, etc. coming loose. It was very well designed.

On the Stroller

Even though the bag is beautiful and well organized inside, the only downside to it (beside the cost!) is that it simply does not stay put on some strollers. We have an UppaBaby Vista as our large stroller, and a smaller, travel stroller for plane travel (Joolz Aer). On both strollers, the straps of the bag just don’t stay put on the handlebar, and slide down. The buttons on the long handles are champs at creating and maintaining the loops that theoretically would be used to keep the bag in place on the handlebars, but the loops themselves slide down the stroller handrails and don’t stay in place.

If there is nothing on the stroller handrails to stop the straps from sliding down, the straps of the bag only stop when they hit something, which in our case is the stroller canopy. This happened on our Joolz Aer, and when the bag slid down the handlebars and hit the canopy, the canopy was damaged and went off its rails. On our larger UppaBaby Vista there are two plastic pieces jutting out just off the handlebar, and thankfully the bag would get caught on those when sliding down and not go down into the canopy. I am not a fan of the loops. If I were making the bag, I would have made the loops created by the buttons just a bit tighter, so maybe there’s not so much of a slide. An alternative could be to purchase a hook of some kind for your stroller to hold the bag straps, so you can hang the bag off the hooks instead of relying them to stay in place on the handlebars.

Beautiful complement to the stroller, notice the bag handles hit and stop at the stroller’s light grey plastic ridges, which keep the bag from sliding down further – works ok here.
On the travel stroller, the straps are already sliding down – about to slide down all the way until they hit the canopy. May need hooks.

As an alternative to having the bag hang over the handlebar, you could put it underneath in the stroller basket, but this may be tough if you’re using a smaller stroller like the yoyo or Joolz Aer which has very limited space in the underbasket. You could also carry the bag like a briefcase with one hand, or loop the long strap over your shoulder, but that may not be ideal if you’re pushing a stroller.

Concluding Thoughts

This bag is beautiful, well-organized, and high-quality. I love seeing it on our stroller in place of the more ‘traditional’ diaper bags, and I don’t regret the purchase as it brings me joy every time I see it. It does not scream ‘baby!’ and later I can use it for my own, adult purposes way after the diapering stage is over.

However, unfortunately, this bag is a pain in the a** to keep in place once attached to a stroller. It’s irritating to have to keep pulling it up onto the handlebars on our travel stroller, and is enough of a headache where I may look into some hooks to attach to the stroller to keep the bag in place. If you have some pieces jutting out on the stroller or some other kind of mechanism to keep the bag from sliding down the handrail, it may not be such a headache for you. I love the philosopy of the brand and the quality of the craftsmanship, but something to keep in mind if your primary stroller choice is a smaller version.
